Pegões Historical Review:
The territory belonging to Pegões was detached from the Parish of Canha, the county town, until 1838, and was part, since 1186, of the domains of the Order of Santiago.

Pegões, particularly Pegões-Cruzamento was, since ancient times, a place of passage for travellers and goods between Lisbon and the Alentejo, and even Spain, through Montijo.

The Roman road passed through here, used, in part, for the construction, in the Middle Ages, of what would become known as the Royal Road, which connected Aldeia Galega to Vendas Novas, replaced by the current EN 4, but maintaining the route between the so-called Pegões Velhos (today the localide of Sto. Isidro de Pegões) and the intersection of Pegões.

Through the Royal Road, crossing Pegões-Cruzamento, passed the so-called Mala-posta, the first regular passenger and cargo transport service, in addition to mail, between Montijo and Badajoz, established in 1533, which remained in operation until the inauguration of the Eastern railway line (between Barreiro and the Spanish border, passing through Vendas Novas), in 1863.

From that date on, once the Pegões-Gare halt was installed, Pegões progressively assumed a relevant role in the flow of agricultural products and in the transport of passengers between Lisbon and the Alentejo.

Similar to what happened with other crossing points, along the railway line, the development pole, traditionally associated with localities crossed by the highways, is diverted to the places served by the railway line, assuming its own toponymy: in this case, Pegões-Gare in counterpoint to Pegões Velhos.

In addition to the connection with the railway, there is the fact that this parish, namely its headquarters, Pegões-Cruzamento, is the intersection point between the EN4 and EN10, so that all the favourable conditions are created for the development of goods and the implementation of industrial units, which we are witnessing today.

Law No. 94/85, of October 4 (Diário da República, Series I, No. 229, of October 4, 1985) created the Parish of Pegões, having been approved in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic on July 11, 1985, after a favourable opinion of the Municipality of Montijo on May 23, 1979.
With Law No. 11-A/2013 of January 28, the parish of Pegões was added to the parish of Santo Isidro de Pegões.
