This Rua dos Correeiros that we see today joining Rua da Conceição to Praça da Figueira was born from the Pombaline Ordinance of November 5, 1760, which gave names to the streets of the rebuilt Lisbon downtown after the earthquake of 1755 - between Praça do Comércio and the then designated Rossio -, as well as determined that «in it the Officios de Corrieiro, of Saddler, and of Turner.»
This royal decree of 1760 was the first diploma that dealt exclusively with toponymic matters and the toponymic nomenclature attributed also corresponded to the establishment of arts and crafts by the streets, having been the «Rua Nova d'El Rey [today, Rua do Comércio], Rua Augusta, Rua Áurea, Rua Bella da Rainha [today, Rua da Prata], Rua Nova da Princesa [today Rua dos Fanqueiros], Rua dos Douradores, Rua dos Correeiros, Rua dos Sapateiros, Rua de S. Julião, Rua da Conceição, Rua de S. Nicolau, Rua da Victoria, Rua da Assumpção and Rua de Santa Justa».
The Municipal Edict of November 6, 1920, added to it the commonly called Rua das Galinheiras as well as Rua Nova de São Domingos. About thirty years later, the municipal edict of August 28, 1950 removed the section between Rua do Amparo and Largo de São Domingos to give birth to Rua Dom Antão de Almada.
In this artery commonly known as Travessa da Palha and where in the second half of the nineteenth century many Galicians were grazing houses, when they emigrated en masse to Portugal, it was also the birthplace of Rosa Araújo, on November 17, 1840, the mayor responsible for the opening of Avenida da Liberdade.
