Carvoeiro is a small village in the windward area of the Algarve. According to historical sources, the name of the village derives from 'Caboiere', an ancient name for a fishing village of the Arab-medieval period. Also known as Praia do Carvoeiro, it is a Portuguese village in the municipality of Lagoa, with an area of 11.12 km² and 2,721 inhabitants. Its population density was 233.4 h/km². It was elevated to the village on April 19, 2001 receiving the name of Vila de Carvoeiro.
There are indications that point to the Roman presence in the village, as well as an extensive maritime activity. The area where the village of Carvoeiro is located has a long history of military and pirate attacks, having witnessed a series of naval battles, among which stands out what gave rise to the battle of 1544 between a squadron of ships commanded by Dom Pedro da Cunha and the Turkish corsiary named Xarramet.
For most of its history, fishing has been the pillar of the local economy, however, today the main economic sector of this picturesque village is tourism. A dry, warm climate and breathtaking beaches make this an ideal destination for golf and water sports or simply to rest.
